Why your air fryer's running cost matters
The wattage on the box is the peak draw — what the element and fan can pull when fully loaded. The number that actually hits your bill is the average energy per cook, which depends on the fryer size, how long you run it and how many times your household uses it each week.
Three things decide the real monthly figure: the fryer class (a compact 2 L at 800 W sips power, an XL 6.5 L at 1,800 W is built for bulk batches), how often your family cooks with it, and what it replaces — the same dish deep-fried or on an LPG hob costs both gas and oil. This calculator adds all three together for every member of your home and prices it at your editable rates.

How your estimate is worked out
For each member we estimate one cook as (watts ÷ 1000) × (mins ÷ 60) kWh, multiply by uses per week and by 4.33 weeks to get the monthly figure. LPG is (mins ÷ 60) × 0.10 kg/h × uses on the same schedule. Oil saved is 30 ml × uses. Both energy figures are priced at your editable rates and summed for the household total.

Cut the cost of air frying
Don't over-preheat
Most air fryers need just 2–3 minutes to preheat. Skipping a 5-minute empty run can save ~10% per cook.
Cook in a single layer
Crowding the basket doubles cook time. A single even layer crisps faster and uses less energy than two long cycles.
Switch off at the socket
On standby an air fryer can draw a few watts for the display. Switch it off at the wall when not in use.
A little oil goes a long way
A single spray (~5 ml) is enough for most foods — you still save ~30 ml versus deep-frying and keep the crisp.

Does a bigger air fryer use more electricity?
Yes, per minute — but not per portion. An XL 6.5 L at 1,800 W can cook twice the food of a 2 L in one cycle, so energy per serving can be similar or lower if you fill the basket.
How much cooking oil does an air fryer save?
About 30 ml per cook versus shallow/deep-frying the same quantity (e.g. 35–40 ml down to ~5 ml spray). A household doing 20 cooks a month saves ~0.6 L of oil — roughly ₹90–₹120 at current oil prices.
Does preheating add a lot to the cost?
Not much, but it adds up. A 3-minute preheat on a 1,500 W fryer is ~0.08 kWh (~₹0.50). Keep it to 2–3 minutes or skip it for foods that don't need it.
What capacity do I need for my family?
2 L is tight for more than one person. 4.5 L handles 2–4 portions (the most popular size in India). 6.5 L is best for 4–6 people or if you batch-cook. Bigger means higher watts but fewer batches.
Do air fryers use electricity when off?
Most draw 0.5–2 W on standby for the clock/display if left plugged in. It's tiny per hour, but switching off at the socket eliminates it entirely.
Can I use the LPG price to compare fairly?

How do I find my air fryer's actual wattage?
Check the rating plate on the bottom or the spec sheet — it lists watts (e.g. 1,400–1,800 W) and capacity in litres. If it lists only amps, watts ≈ amps × 230 V.
