Why your robot vacuum's electricity and coverage matter

A robot vacuum sips power compared to an AC or geyser — even the strongest 55 W model uses less than a ceiling fan — but the number that actually decides satisfaction is area per charge. Two homes with the same robot can have very different experiences if one is a 600 sq ft 1BHK and the other a 1,800 sq ft duplex.

Three things decide the real figures: the vacuum class (an entry 25 W / 2,000 Pa with 2,600 mAh does ~855 sq ft per charge, a mid 35 W / 3,000 Pa with 3,200 mAh ~1,100 sq ft, a premium 55 W / 5,000 Pa with 5,200 mAh ~1,650 sq ft), how often and how long it runs each week, and your home's cleanable area. This calculator turns watts and minutes into kWh and rupees, and checks whether your home fits in one charge — before you buy.

Defaults are India-first: ₹6.5 per kWh and ₹1,500/year for consumables (brushes, filter, mop pads — auto-dock bags cost more). Home area defaults to a typical 2BHK cleanable (~1,100 sq ft). Runs and mins are editable so a daily pet-home schedule and a twice-a-week tidy both price correctly. Rates and coverage are averages, not your exact lab-tested figure.

How It's Calculated

How your estimate is worked out

Energy per run is watts ÷ 1000 × (mins ÷ 60) kWh. Multiply by runs per week and by 4.33 weeks for monthly, ×12 for annual, then × your ₹/kWh rate. Consumables are spread evenly: annual ÷ 12 for monthly, ÷ 365 for daily. Area per charge is runtime mins × coverage sq ft per min; coverage per run is mins per run × coverage per min. We compare both to your home area to show if it finishes in one charge.

Assumption Value
Entry · energy per run25 W × 60 min ≈ 0.025 kWh
Mid · energy per run35 W × 60 min ≈ 0.035 kWh
Premium · energy per run55 W × 60 min ≈ 0.055 kWh
Weeks per month4.33
Coverage rate Entry 9.5 · Mid 10 · Premium 11 sq ft/min
Area per charge Entry 855 · Mid 1,100 · Premium 1,650 sq ft
Default tariff ₹6.5 per kWh (editable)
Consumables ₹1,500/yr default (editable) · Entry ₹1,000 · Mid ₹1,500 · Premium ₹2,500
Formula kWh = watts/1000 × hrs · Cost = kWh × rate

Estimates only — actual draw varies with suction mode, floor type (carpet pulls more), obstacle density and battery age. See the spec sticker for rated watts and runtime.

How does your robot vacuum compare?

Monthly total below assumes 5 runs/week, 60 minutes per run, at ₹6.5/kWh plus type-typical consumables (Entry ₹1,000/yr, Mid ₹1,500/yr, Premium ₹2,500/yr). Coverage per charge uses rated runtime and coverage rate.

Cut the cost and improve coverage

  • Use auto / standard suction

Turbo 5,000 Pa is for deep carpet. Auto mode on hard floors uses 30–40% less power and still cleans well.

  • Schedule when you're out

Fewer obstacles means fewer re-routes. A clean run path finishes faster and uses less battery per sq ft.

  • Empty the bin and clean brushes

A full dustbin or tangled brush forces the motor to work harder — suction drops and runtime shortens.

  • Replace consumables on schedule

A clogged HEPA filter or worn side brush cleans less per run, so the robot runs longer for the same home. Budget roughly ₹1,000–₹2,500 a year for brushes, filters and mop pads — compatible kits cost about half of branded ones.

  • Let it dock fully

Partial charges degrade lithium batteries faster. A full dock cycle keeps capacity and coverage per charge high.

  • Zone clean, don't repeat whole home

Use room zones or no-go lines. Cleaning only the living + kitchen daily saves ~40% energy versus a full-home run each time.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a robot vacuum use per charge?

A 25 W entry (~90 min) uses ~0.038 kWh per full charge, a 35 W mid (~110 min) ~0.064 kWh, and a 55 W premium (~150 min) ~0.138 kWh. At ₹6.5/kWh that's roughly ₹0.25, ₹0.42 and ₹0.90 per full charge.

How is area per charge calculated?

Area per charge is runtime mins × coverage per min (entry 9.5, mid 10, premium 11 sq ft/min). That's about 855, 1,100 and 1,650 sq ft per full battery respectively — the usable floor it can sweep before needing to dock.

Will it cover my 2BHK in one charge?

A typical 1,100 sq ft 2BHK cleanable area needs a mid (1,100 sq ft) or premium (1,650 sq ft) to finish in one charge. An entry (855 sq ft) will need to recharge and resume for that size. Use the slider above to check your exact area.

What is the average monthly electricity cost of a robot vacuum in India?

At 5 runs/week, 60 min each, at ₹6.5/kWh: entry ~₹5/mo, mid ~₹7/mo, premium ~₹11/mo — about ₹65–₹135 per year. Even daily 60-min premium use is only ~₹16/mo. Robot vacuums are very cheap to run.

Does higher suction use more electricity?

Yes. Suction and brush motors draw more at max — a 55 W premium at 5,000 Pa can use double the energy per minute versus 25 W entry at 2,000 Pa. Auto/standard mode throttles down on hard floors and saves energy.

How do I find my robot vacuum's actual wattage and battery?

Check the bottom label or manual — it lists rated power (e.g. 25–55 W), suction (Pa) and battery (e.g. 2,600–5,200 mAh) plus max runtime in minutes (e.g. 90–150 min).

Does the dock use electricity on standby?

The dock draws 1–3 W on standby to keep the robot topped up and Wi-Fi alive — roughly ₹15–₹35 per year if always plugged in. It's tiny compared to other appliances.

Can I reduce electricity use without cleaning less often?

Yes — use standard suction, keep the dustbin empty, clean side brushes weekly, schedule when you're out for a faster path, and zone clean high-traffic rooms instead of the whole home every time.

How much do replacement brushes and filters cost per year?

Budget roughly ₹1,000 a year for an entry model (side brushes + filter), ~₹1,500 for a mid model with mop pads, and ~₹2,500 for a premium auto-empty model with dust bags. That dwarfs the electricity itself — consumables are 90%+ of a robot vacuum's running cost.

What if my run time is longer than the battery runtime?

If mins per run exceeds the robot's max runtime, it will auto-return, recharge (2–4 hrs) and resume. The calculator flags when your home needs multiple charges and estimates how many.

Is a premium robot worth the higher power use?

For large homes and pets, yes — the higher wattage is offset by fewer charges and better pickup, so total energy per sq ft is similar. Choose battery & coverage for your area first, watts second.
