Why your washing machine's running cost matters
The wattage on the box is the peak draw — what the motor and heater can pull for a few minutes. The number that actually hits your bill is the average energy per wash, which depends on the machine class, its cycle length and whether you heat the water.
Three things decide the real monthly figure: the machine type (a semi-automatic sips power at ~350 W, a front-loader with its heater on can cross 2,500 W for part of the cycle), how many washes your household runs each week, and water — every wash also costs litres, and in tanker or borewell homes those litres have a rupee value too. This calculator adds all three together for every person in your home.
Defaults are India-first: ₹6.5 per kWh for electricity and ₹0.02 per litre for water (raise it to ~₹0.35 if you pay for tankers, or 0 if water is effectively free).

How your estimate is worked out
For each member we estimate one wash as base kWh + heater kWh, multiply by washes per week and by 4.33 weeks to get the monthly figure. Water is litres per wash × washes on the same schedule. Both are priced at your editable rates and summed for the household total.

Cut the cost of washing
Wash cold whenever you can
A front-loader's heater is the single biggest cost — a hot wash can use triple the energy of a cold one. Cold cleans most daily laundry fine.
Fill to capacity
Two half-loads use almost twice the water and energy of one full load. Wait until the drum is full.
Use quick / eco mode
Eco programmes use lower temperatures and shorter spins — cutting ~20–30% energy and water for lightly soiled clothes.
Clean the filter and drain
A clogged drain pump makes the motor work harder and spins less efficiently, quietly raising energy use.
Re-use water if you can
Semi-auto rinse water can be re-used for mopping or the next rinse. In tanker homes every litre saved is rupees saved.

Frequently asked questions
How much electricity does a washing machine use per wash?
A semi-auto (~350 W, ~70 min) uses roughly 0.4 kWh per wash, a top-load fully auto (~400 W) about 0.43 kWh, and a front-load (~500 W) about 0.63 kWh cold. With the heater on, a front-load hot wash can reach ~1.5–1.7 kWh.
Does a hot wash cost a lot more?
Yes — the 2 kW heater is the biggest draw. On a front-loader a hot wash adds about 1.1 kWh versus cold, roughly ₹7 extra per wash at ₹6.5/kWh. Warm is about half that.
Do front-load machines use more water?
In our default table we use 80 L for front-load (many programmes), 60 L for top-load auto and 40 L for semi-auto. Real front-load eco programmes can be lower; top-loads are usually the thirstiest.
Is a semi-automatic cheaper to run than a fully automatic?
Usually yes, per wash. The motor is smaller and there's no heater or inlet pump. For a 3-person home doing ~8 washes a week, a semi-auto can save ₹150–₹300 a month versus a front-load on hot.
How do I find my machine's actual power and water use?
Check the rating plate on the back for watts and the manual or spec sheet for water per cycle. Most 6–7 kg machines list 40–65 L per wash; front-load manuals also list heater power (often 1.8–2.0 kW).
Does load size change the cost?
Energy per wash is almost the same whether the drum is half or full — so a full drum is much cheaper per kg of laundry. Water use scales a little with load on auto-sensing models but not much.
Should I include water cost if I have municipal water?
If water is effectively free, set the water rate to 0 — the calculator will then show electricity only. If you pay for tankers or borewell power, set your real ₹/L (e.g. ₹0.35 for tankers).
What's the average monthly cost of a washing machine in India?
For a top-load fully auto with a family doing ~8 washes a week cold, expect roughly ₹140–₹220 a month (electricity + water at default rates). Hot front-load use can push it to ₹400–₹600.
Tanker water vs municipal — how much does water really cost?
Municipal water is often ₹0.01–0.05/L. Tanker water at ₹500–₹700 per 1,000 L is ~₹0.50–₹0.70/L — making water the bigger share of the bill. The toggle lets you price it properly.
How can I reduce washing machine costs without changing my routine?
Always wash cold, use eco/quick mode, keep the filter clean, ensure the drain hose isn't kinked, and turn the machine off at the socket after use — standby can draw a few watts.
